What's With Sugar?

The standard American diet is full of sugar – and a lot of the time it is hidden sugars in foods that are marketed as “healthy”. It has become so prevalent that if you removed all the items containing it from your grocery store shelves just 20% of items would remain. Most of the sugar that we are consuming is not natural – but added highly refined sugar. How did we get to this point?

The history of sugar:

  • The first reports of sugar came from New Guiney in 8000 BC! Sugar eventually migrated to India
  • In the 12th century sugar arrived in Europe. It was loved so much and became a staple for Royalty (Queen Elizabeth I loved sugar so much that her teeth rotted and all fell out)
  • At the turn of the 20th century sugar was still seen as a treat – but in 1955 an event occurred that significantly changed the amount of sugar we eat today

Organic has unfortunately become a buzz word with many negative aspects to it. It is a term that has been manipulated by so many people you either love to choose organic or don't care to. The increase in knowledge we are receiving on how our food is being prepared (grown and harvested) is the reason why organic living has become popular. Hormones, pesticides and antibiotics are a large part of conventional farming and the effects that these chemicals have on our health is not fully understood! With that being said these chemicals have become a part our food for the past few decades in order to increase the volume of food produced to feed our growing population (most argue that it is a must).

5 Breakfasts to get your Morning Going!

If you are going to consume breakfast every morning it should be a nutritious meal to fuel the body for the day ahead. Most choices are heavily influenced by grains and dairy, such as cereal and milk, bagels and cream cheese or yogurt and granola. The more processed a food item is the less nutrition it will carry. As well Here are some other super nutritious breakfast ideas to begin the day.

  1. Breakfast Smoothie:

Typically for smoothies you need the following:

  • Liquid base: I prefer a nut milk (almond/cashew) but you can do coconut water, milk or water
  • Protein: a plant-based protein source is best (better absorbed in the body) but you can use protein powder or Greek yogurt
  • Greens: most of my smoothies have spinach or kale for super nutrients
  • Fruit: to sweeten the smoothie naturally
  • Booster: added benefits to a smoothie (I use chia or flaxseed, spirulina, bee pollen vitamin C powder, nutriSea omega 3)

The word detox has become well known in the past decade because we live in a world of abundance but have an attitude of lack towards our health. Winter Blues? Stop Eating These Foods!

The season of winter can seem long and drawing. Many Canadians are affected by seasonal affective disorder or SAD – a depressive state during the autumn and winter months. January and February (after the holidays) seem to be the months most are affected. SAD has been associated with a lack of sunlight due to the dark and cloudy days and the blistering cold weeks where no one leaves the house. I believe that this with the combination of poor eating habits cause the depressive epidemic we see each winter.

Other than taking vacation to the tropics there is little to do to improve sun exposure for Canadians. Taking a vitamin D drop each day is one suggestion that I always recommend when dealing with SAD (I prefer the brand Orange). However, diet can significantly determine mood. Recipe: Green Smoothie

Do you smoothie? I know this isn’t gonna be a healthy habit post for everyone - but when done right smoothies can be one of the most nutrient dense meals of the day.

Why are they beneficial?

1. You can hide a surprising amount of veggies in each serving

2. It is quite easily absorbed by the body as smoothies are basically broken down foods (the digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard)

3. You can add a ton of boosters that turn a smoothie into a superfood

How do I smoothie?

I always start with a base (water or a nut mylk - preferably coconut milk or cashew they are creamier) then I add my veggies (spinach, beets, celery, cucumber) I BLEND HERE SO THE VEG GETS NICE AND BROKEN DOWN - very important unless you want to chance getting a mouth full of leaves.

Recipe: Chickpea and Sweet Potato Coconut Curry

There is nothing better than a warming dish of curried vegetables on a winter day! The combination of spices and coconut really make this dish AMAZING! Inspired by Angela Liddon this plant based meal is a must have during the winter season.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tabespoons virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 3 large cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander 
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 medium/large sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch
  • 15oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 14oz can diced tomatoes, with juices
  • 14oz can light coconut milk
  • 5oz package baby spinach 
  • Freshly ground black pepper

For serving

  • Cooked basmati rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice

1. You roll your eyes in annoyance as this is clearly a marketing placement since the entirety of North America seems to be so afraid of "gluten", a substance that has been around for as long as wheat has grown on the earth - so what's the big deal? And you avoid completely

2. You gravitate to all that say gluten free since gluten must be bad for you if the media has so many negative things to say.

3. You understand what gluten is and how it affects the boy. You realize that the consumption of gluten in the North American society is far greater than it has ever been in the history so naturally sensitivities are on the rise. BUT you look at the ingredients on all foods labelled GLUTEN FREE as you also know that most recipes are loaded with sugars and other unhealthy substitutes.
